Rum Hot Toddy

The Hot Toddy has a history dating back hundreds if not thousands of years. This is a variation on the hot toddy cocktail recipe theme because this is a cocktail made with rum. I am always on the lookout for new rum recipes and when I stumbled across this I just had to try it.

The Rum Hot Toddy

It is perfect for those winter evenings or when you are feeling a bit crappy or when you have a head cold and are all stuffed up.

The Ingredients

1/4 cup sugar
2/3 cup spiced rum
4 tablespoons honey
3 cups boiling water
4 cinnamon sticks
4 lemon slices

Method

For starters you prepare by spreading sugar onto a plate. Next you dip the rim of each of the mugs into cold water and then dip the wet rims of each mug into sugar. Mix the rum and honey in a 4-cup measuring cup. Next you add 3 cups of boiling water and stir to blend. Then pour the hot toddy in equal quantities into the prepared mugs. Garnish with cinnamon sticks and lemon slices and serve.

The hot toddy is a classic, albeit one which is perhaps more traditionally associated with Whisky. I am always on the lookout for interesting new rum recipes and this was one I just had to give a try. If you are into cocktails generally then you have to check out our sister site, Cocktail Recipes. Afterparty Dregs

The rum recipes blog is pleased to bring you this cocktail recipe.  The name doesn’t sound too flash I admit but folks, you have to trust me on this one because it tastes absolutely divine. As far as rum recipes go this one is a beauty and I just had to share it with you all. This cocktail recipe mixes together the smooth flavors of dark rum, Baileys and Kahlua. If you love those liqueurs then like me you’ll be licking your lips at the very thought of this rum recipe!

A Classic Rum Cocktail

A word of warning though, be careful not to have too many of these cocktails because there’s a whole lot of alcohol in each drink by the time you include three types of rum and two other spirits!

So anyway, let’s look at the ingredients.

Drink Mix Ingredients:

1 oz.  Kahlua coffee liqueur
4 oz.  Bailey’s Irish cream
1 oz Gosling’s Black S.  dark rum
1 oz Occumare.  gold rum
1 oz Phillips’.  butterscotch liqueur
2 oz Potter’s.  creme de cacao
1 tbsp.  151 proof rum

Mixing Instructions

Combine all of the ingredients except the 151 proof in a large mixer with ice and shake until slightly frothed. Strain the drink mix into a highball glass if you’ve got one and if not, the nearest thing you can find. Lastly, use the back of a tablespoon to float the 151 onto the drink. Serve with a straw.

Rum Recipes | Yum Yum – Hot Buttered Rum

If we think of winter drinks then invariably our minds will turn to yummy hot drinks. An alternative to hot whisky is a new favorite rum recipe of mine in the form of the hot buttered rum. As a rum fan from way back the taste buds start tingling just thinking about it!

Yummy Hot Buttered Rum | Rum Recipes

When I looked into it and researched some favorite books looking for a tried and true recipe, I was delighted at just how straightforward it was too! A word of warning that it does contain a lot of sweetening agents but in winter when we are looking carry a bit of winter padding to keep warm who can resist?

You take 1.5 to 3 oz of softened butter (or if you’re in metric about 50-100 g), ¾ of a cup of brown sugar, ¼ cup of a sweetener such as honey, golden syrup or agave nectar, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/8th of a teaspoon each of nutmeg, cloves and allspice, a shot (or two) of rum to taste and a small pinch of salt.

You stir it all together into a quite thick batter. Take one or two tablespoons full of the mixture (depending on taste) and mix it in a coffee cup with another shot of rum and hot water. Then you just need to sit back and enjoy a satisfying hot winter drink.

As to what rum to use, my personal favorites are some of the Australian ones (yes, they make good quality rum down under in Australia) but the only qualification I would make is whatever your favorite, use a good quality rum as a crappy one will only taste worse when heated.
